Call of Duty is one of the few behemoth gaming franchises to receive a yearly release and yet still maintain a close grip on its quality – and it could be argued that with last year’s Call of Duty; Cold War that they actually improved a lot!
So, in-between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Warzone, and the Cold War, there have been some rumors knocking around regarding the newest mainline entry into the Call of Duty franchise – namely that it will be taken back to the Baltic state war.
If you’re reading this and thinking that sounds familiar, then you would be right. In 2010 Call of Duty: Black Ops was released by Treyarch, becoming the ninth main Call of Duty game released to the public. Funnily enough, it was the direct successor to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and now that we have seen a remaster of that we could be heading back to the same setting again. Déjà vu.
The big question that a lot of Call of Duty fans have right now is: Will the new game be a reboot of the Black Ops franchise? And the only answer we can give is ‘maybe’. The thing is, Black Ops was tremendously successful for the Call of Duty teams, and now that Modern Warfare is enjoying a heightened level of success once again, perhaps the development team decided it was time to return to the halcyon days of releasing a Modern Warfare one year, and a Black Ops title the next.
In the original Black Ops, players were treated to a campaign set in the height of the cold war, with missions taking place in Vietnam while the player took on the role of a CIA agent taking part in the conflict – amongst other levels.
Whether or not this newest entry into the franchise will be similar to the old Black Ops remains to be seen, but with the almost toned down action that players enjoyed in Modern Warfare, it would be interesting to see a Call Of Duty with international level of conflicts once again, widening the battlefield and opening up combat options.
The rumblings that this new COD might be a new or soft reboot of the Black Ops franchise seems to have been furthered by none other than Jason Schreier himself, who currently works for Kotaku, and is one of the most trusted and reliable sources in the gaming industry when it comes to news.
Scheirer stated that he had heard the term COD: Vietnam ‘thrown around a couple of times’ and that the game is part of the Black Ops series as far as he knew – though he did state he wasn’t certain. He also mentioned in a separate tweet that we can expect to see the new Call of Duty later this year, and if a reveal is planned, it’s more than likely we could see a trailer attached to the reveal of the newest generations of consoles, possibly making this a next-gen Call of Duty title.
It remains to be seen exactly what is in store with us regarding the newest Call of Duty, but one thing is certain – it doesn’t look like we have long to wait to find out.
